Our Story San Marcos la Laguna, Solola, Guatemala
In 1996, a small rural clinic was conceived by our founder Manfred Gritsch, a Medical of Natural medicine, after witnessing the over whelming needs of the indigenous Mayan people and the lack of available healthcare services and resources. One particular village, San Marcos la Laguna, captivated his heart during his volunteer medical visits to Guatemala. Manfred trained an indigenous practicioner, Celestino, and together they began servicing the small communities’ healthcare needs during construction of a new clinic in 1999. After completion of the clinic in 2000, currently named Clinica Naturista, he met an American RN & midwife, Cindy Waterman, working amongst the indigenous midwives in the area. So meeting Manfred and later partnering with him to co-create the foundation, Clinicas Maya, proved an important and needed component to further their work together in San Marcos. In 2003, Clinicas Maya became a US based non profit 501(c ) 3 tax exempt foundation with a clinical site location in Clinica Naturista, here in Guatemala. Our founder, Manfred Gritsch, and director CindyWaterman together, decided our principal goal is to make resources, education and training, along with self help programs, accessible to the Mayan Indigenous communities, where the need is the greatest. Presently, CLINICAS MAYA, serves and implements 5 current programs.
